Phase 2 of 5

Trying to conceive

When wanting turns into trying, and the path is not always straightforward

Hope Frustration Patience

Trying to conceive can be one of the most intense moments of the perinatal journey. What is often imagined as something natural and quick can become a process that tests your patience, your self-esteem and your relationship.

Each passing cycle brings an emotional rollercoaster: hope at the start, anxiety during the wait, sadness if it does not happen. This repetition can be deeply wearing, especially when the people around you do not grasp how big this is for you.

What happens during this phase

The monthly wait

Each month restarts a cycle of hope and possible disappointment. This repetition brings emotional exhaustion, a constant watchfulness over your own body and a sense of lost control that seeps into daily life.

Fertility treatments

When trying to conceive involves medical treatment, the emotional impact multiplies. Hormones, appointments, decisions and results create a burden that is not always recognised or properly supported.

Impact on the relationship

Trying to conceive can change intimacy, create tension and set up patterns of guilt or shared frustration. Something you wanted together can quietly turn into a source of conflict.

Social isolation

When other people are announcing pregnancies, going to celebrations or fielding questions about family can be painful. The sense that the world is moving on while you wait makes the loneliness sharper.

How I support you during this phase

Support here is about holding you emotionally through a process that can be long and unpredictable:

Offering a space to express frustration, sadness and exhaustion without filters or judgement.

Helping you manage the anxiety of waiting and the emotions that come round again with every attempt.

Supporting you through the emotional impact of fertility treatment, if that is part of your path.

Working on the patterns between you and your partner that this stage can strain.

Holding hope without minimising the pain, respecting your pace and your process.

Trying to conceive is not just a biological process. It is an emotional journey, and it deserves the same care and attention as any other stage of life.
