Phase 4 of 5

Birth

A moment of intensity that leaves an emotional imprint

Intensity Transformation

The birth of a child is one of the most intense events a person can experience. In the space of a few hours, physical effort, emotional overwhelm, medical decisions and the meeting with a new person who changes everything all come together.

The experience of birth stays in emotional memory. When it has gone well, it can be a source of strength. When it has been difficult, traumatic or very different from what you expected, it can leave a mark that needs tending to.

What happens during this phase

Expectations and reality

Many people prepare a birth plan with care and excitement. When the actual experience is very different from what was imagined, feelings of loss, frustration or even guilt can surface, and they deserve to be heard and worked through.

The emotional impact of birth

An instrumental delivery, an emergency caesarean, unforeseen complications or being treated without respect can leave a deep emotional mark. Physical pain passes; emotional pain needs a different kind of attention.

When you are the partner

The partner who is there also lives the birth intensely. Helplessness, fear for the person giving birth and the pressure to be strong all leave a mark that usually goes unseen.

The first meeting

The moment of first contact with the baby does not always feel the way you expected. Exhaustion, anaesthesia or medical circumstances can interfere. Not feeling an immediate connection does not mean something is wrong.

How I support you during this phase

Support around birth adapts to what you need, before or after the birth itself:

Preparing for birth emotionally: fears, expectations, wishes and plans.

Working through the birth when it has been difficult, unexpected or traumatic.

Making space for grief over the birth that did not happen, without minimising or comparing.

Working on the impact on your relationship and on the bond with the baby.

Recognising birth trauma when it is there, and the specialised care it needs.

Birth is a dividing line. How it is lived and worked through shapes the emotional wellbeing of the whole family. Tending to it means caring for the present and for the future.
